On December 1, 2021, the new veterans disability rates for 2022 went into effect. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) updates veterans’ disability compensation rates at the end of each year. For 2022, VA increased veterans’ disability rates by 5.9% – the biggest increase in over 10 years.

What are the new VA disability rates for 2022? How much do veterans get per month in VA benefits? How does VA calculate disability rates? What is the 2022 VA pay schedule? Read on for quick, clear, easy answers to all these and more.

2022 VA Monthly Payment Amount

VA assigns a veteran’s monthly payment amount according to (1) your disability rating, and (2) your dependents. The fastest way to find your monthly VA payment amount for 2022 is to check the table below or use our VA Disability Calculator.

2022 Veteran Disability Payment Amounts Table

3 steps to using the table:

  1. Go down the column on the far left and pick the best match for you. That will be your “block” (you can disregard the rest of the table).
  2. Now select your percent disability rating in that block. You will find the monthly payment amount beside it.
  3. To add money to your monthly payment amount, see if any of the remaining columns toward the right apply to you (additional children, additional children in a qualifying school program, or spouse received aid and assistance benefits). Add those amounts to your monthly amount for your total monthly VA disability payment amount.

Example:

A veteran with a 60% disability rating who has a spouse with aid and assistance benefits, 2 children, and 1 parent dependent, would receive a monthly payment of $1,496.03:

  • Plus $102.00 (because the spouse gets aid and assistance benefits)
  • Plus $55.00 (for the additional child)
  • Plus $178 (because one child attends a qualifying school program)

Therefore, this veteran’s total monthly VA payment would equal $1831.03. If this veteran had more children, they would receive $55 for each additional child and $178 for each additional child attending a qualifying school program.

What Are Aid and Attendance Benefits?

You’ll notice that you get a higher benefit rate if you or your dependents receive Aid and Attendance benefits. Who is eligible for VA Aid and Attendance benefits? Veterans or surviving family members who receive a VA pension, have a combined disability rating of at least 30%, AND at least one of the following is true:

  • Need help with daily activities (eating, bathing, dressing)
  • Stay in bed (or spend a major portion of the day in bed) due to illness
  • Reside in a nursing home due to mental or physical disability
  • Vision is impaired (5/200 or less in both eyes even with glasses or contacts, OR visual field of 5 degrees or less)

What is a VA Qualifying School Program?

You’ll see from the Table that veterans with children who attend a “qualifying school program” can get an increased VA disability monthly payment. This add-on applies only to college-age children between 18 and 23 years old.

Basically, any school that qualifies under the GI Bill is considered a “qualifying school program” for this disability benefits increase. You can see if your child’s school is included using the VA’s School Search Form.

Who is eligible for college-age dependent VA benefits? Veterans with a combined disability rate of 30% or higher whose child is attending an approved educational program and who file for these benefits within one year of the child’s 18th birthday.

Veterans will need to submit VA Form 21-674 to apply for college-age dependent VA benefits. On this “-Request for Approval of School Attendance form, the veteran will supply:

  • Identifying information on the child
  • Name and address of the school
  • Type of program the child is attending
  • How many hours per week the child will attend (if less than full-time)
  • Estimated start and graduation dates
  • Start date of the school’s term
  • Child’s class schedule
  • Child’s income and assets (employment, annuities, savings, federal education benefits, real estate, property, bonds, social security payment schedules, and amounts)

VA college-age dependent benefit payments begin on the child’s 18th birthday when (1) VA receives Form 21-674 within one year of the child’s 18th birthday, and (2) the child was attending school during the term of their 18th birthday.

Otherwise, monthly payments will begin on the first day of the month after the child started attending school. Still here, the VA must receive proof of school attendance within one year of the day your child started school.

College-age VA benefit payments end on the date your child stops attending a qualified school program or on the child’s 23rd birthday.
